If you haven't been to the Minnesota State Fair, you are sincerely missing out. I have many fond memories of it, although one time I challenged myself to eat 18 different fried foods and then I was resigned to my bed, in the fetal position, for the rest of the evening to recover.
I bring this up because I had a similar (but less extreme) experience at Revival. I haven't made it over there yet this summer because of its rich menu. So rich, in fact, that it's daunting. I've been trying to eat clean (haha sureeeeeeee) in preparation for study abroad, so a menu like Revival's is enough to throw anyone for a loop.
Down to business: We had their Johnny Cakes (cornmeal pancakes stuffed with bacon and topped with an egg, micro greens, beans and sweet syrup of some sort) for an appetizer, we split a half Southern Fried Chicken with a side of Mac & Cheese and a S'Mores Pie for dessert. Yes, it was American food at its finest. And yes, it was insanely delicious. Thank goodness we shared.
But, after this experience, I napped for two hours, and had heart burn and a stomach ache, of course. I think I was in bed for probably 4 hours total, just about taking up the entire afternoon, staring at the ceiling trying to convince myself to run despite my lethargy. Over time my stomach of steel no longer works the way it used to and therefore I can't take up the State Fair challenge anymore. Maybe it was because I had only slept for like 5 hours the night before, but it almost wasn't worth eating all of that yummy stuff for it to kill my day.
In conclusion, the atmosphere of the restaurant is nice, and of course the food is amazing. But you should know what you're getting yourself into. This is not for the faint of stomach. There is not a healthy alternative to be found on the menu, and portion sizes are pretty big. I had some idea that this is what I was getting into, but I didn't realize that I would pay the price for it later. At the very least, I tried it, and can say that I went, which is really all I need. But I don't think I will need to run back anytime soon because that was enough comfort food to tide me over for a year. But if you're ever craving southern food, or just need nice comfort food in general, this is your place.
